The Livro Personalidades Restauradas: A Portuguese Masterpiece, An English Translation and Critical Analysis of its Artistic and Historical Significance, Edited by Margarida Correia de Sousa. This book looks at the 17th-century Portuguese masterpiece "Livro de Linne," and in this volume we will explore in depth the work's significance in terms of artistic development and historical context.Explore further what you can learn from it about art history, its literary sources, or other works from this period. And, through the text, we will further deepen our understanding of Catholic artistic traditions in the Spanish Netherlands. The book begins with an analysis of the artistic features of Almeida's masterpiece—from its iconography, to its style and composition—and looks at how this 'fantastic' genre relates to other types of literature and painting during this period. The Personalidades Restauradas ia a Portuguese Masterpiece is the result of an international collaboration between art historians specializing in early modern Iberian visual culture. It began with a conference held at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) in March 2005. For the art historian and conference organizer, this project has been a long and arduous journey. It began in 1998, when she discovered the Livro de Linne in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. She was captivated by it and started her research on it in 1999. In 2001, she presented her thesis at UCSD; in 2003, her study was published (see bibliography below). Today, art history is increasingly an international field of study because of the mobility of scholars due to the increase in exchange programs between institutions around the world, as well as a result of growing technology that enables them to share resources across national boundaries. Internet projects like Wikipedia, in addition to the well-known art history online databases Internet Art Resources (IAR) and International Early Renaissance Painter and Sculptor (IERPS), are all examples that illustrate the growing focus on cross-cultural studies in art history. These projects are an important vehicle for international collaboration, especially when they deal with cultural heritage issues. The present book is another example of an online project seeking to carry out research in this field. My goal in creating this book was to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the Livro de Linne by addressing its artistic, social, and historical contexts. My next goal was to reach a broader audience, one that did not necessarily have access to archives located across the Atlantic Ocean. My hope was to design something that would balance the needs of the specialist and those of the general reader interested in art history, or simply readers interested in Portuguese culture. This collaborative project has resulted in a book that addresses these issues by giving voice to scholars who specialize in early modern Iberian visual culture. This allows for a comprehensive analysis of the Livro de Linne by addressing its artistic, social, and historical contexts. The Personalidades Restauradas ia a Portuguese Masterpiece is the result of an international collaboration between art historians specializing in early modern Iberian visual culture.
